Overview of ideation stage

We’re on to the Ideation Stage now – the part of the process that we’ve all been waiting for! In this stage, we’ll generate as many ideas as possible for solving the reframed problem at hand.

We must mention, though, that you should only move forward with this stage if you’ve successfully completed a minimum amount of research and reframed the challenge from the point of view of the most-affected people. If you haven’t taken those steps yet, you can do so by following our guidance in Chapters 6-8.

Now, back to the Ideation Stage. Having the right mindset is crucial at this stage, and as a facilitator, it’s your job to promote openness and creativity among participants. Here are some tips for encouraging open, creative mindsets:

  • You want as many ideas as possible, so go for quantity over quality.
  • Don’t judge participants’ ideas. You don’t know whose idea will become the next solution.
  • Try to build on the ideas of others.
  • Be respectful, and make room for everyone, especially the quieter ones in the group.

In addition to these tips, you can make use of the following tools: ‘First Burst,’ ‘Brain Writing,’ ‘Idea Filtering’ and a stakeholder value network map. We’ll show you how to use them in the pages that follow.

Slowly, the Ideation Stage will allow ideas to be combined, refined and selected in order to move forward into concept development during the Prototyping Stage.

Q1
In my experience, what has made the difference for several designing processes has been putting an emphasis on inspiration and just making sure that we have the creative kind of mindsets that we need in order to start ideating.

Q1
I struggle with people understanding what an idea is. I think, sometimes, they just share thoughts or words. You know, an idea has a specific components to it, it has to be something that speaks for itself, it doesn’t have to be very detailed, but at the same time, kind of clear enough so that you understand what the idea is trying to sell, like it needs to have a purpose, etc. And, then, sometimes it’s not very well understood, so I sometimes struggle to push people to ideate because they’re often so trapped in the ‘let’s just share reflections’ or ‘let’s just share our thoughts,’ instead of what an idea actually means.

Q1
A reflection relevant for either the Ideation Stage or the Prototyping Stage: “It’s hard for me to run these processes in Spanish because the nature of the processes are also so, I don’t know, Western or the technical concepts… […] So, I think that’s an issue, like, translation and regionalisation of these type of methodologies. And, that’s only for Spanish. But, I can imagine, trying to work with these methods, with people that don’t even speak Spanish. Like, let’s say they speak an Indigenous language or yeah… It’s difficult. It’s still not as inclusive as we would like it to be. And, I think there’s a long way to go in terms of those challenges.

Q1
It makes a lot of sense also to say that we need facilitators that know the content. Sometimes, we always say, ‘Go for it. Just know the tools, know the exercises, know technical part of design thinking, and you can run workshops of creating a toothpaste, a car or a social justice campaign.’ And not. Because the facilitator, at the end, needs to guide the conversation. And, even the design thinking, it’s about being free and creative and coming up with crazy ideas, you still need a framework, like a sandbox, like, ‘You can play with this but not too much with that,’ or, ‘This sounds like someone else already created it.’ So, you need also a sounding board pushing you and trying to challenge you, saying like, ‘No, go beyond the traditional solution.

Q1
A reflection relevant for either the Ideation Stage or the Prototyping Stage: “I think, yes, Miro is very difficult at the beginning. And, you also need to budget time on board all participants. And, if you don’t do that, then it’s very likely that you will fail. But, I think it’s not that hard.”

Q1
A reflection relevant for either the Ideation Stage or the Prototyping Stage: “Always plan and have enough time for every single thing so that you can always go back to them and fill out those gaps. Even if you don’t have time for it during that workshop, budget the time to fill those gaps after with them.”

Q2
A reflection relevant for either the Ideation Stage or the Prototyping Stage: “Remuneration is important because they’re doing actual work. They’re not learning how to do design thinking. There might be designing a solution for them, so that changes a bit of things, but if they’re designing a solution for someone else as a service provider, people should get a stipend for the time, at least if they’re coming from a vulnerable background.
